How to buy the best maternity bra online
When should I get my first maternity bra?
For most women, you’ll know it’s time to get a new bra because your old bras will start to feel uncomfortable. In fact, breasts can feel sore and tender, and you’ll generally notice they are bigger as hormones start to change your body. This usually happens in the first three months of pregnancy, but as soon as you feel that your underwires are pressing on your breast tissue, or you’re starting to spill out of your cups, it’s time to get refitted. Even if you’re belly isn’t showing, it’s time to invest in new bras – and you’ve got lots of options available to you.
Do I have to wear a nursing bra? What are my choices?
Yes, you do have options and no matter what anyone says, it’s your body, your choice. If you’re breasts are quite heavy (and I mean GG cup and larger) then you might want to try a regular underwire bra in a bigger size. You don’t want to put undue pressure on your breasts or milk ducts, so you need to make sure you are regularly refitted throughout your pregnancy. Your bra fitter will explain that you should consistently monitor where the underwire sits so you can check if you need to be refitted again. To this end, you might want to look at our virtual bra fitting service, where we can fit you online, via skype, zoom or facetime. An experienced bra fitter can look at the bra you’re in and recommend some styles to try and a new size.
Another alternative is to wear a flexible wire (flexi-wire) bra. These bras have a very soft wire in them and are perfect to wear throughout your pregnancy up until you give birth. The wires are so soft the centre front (the gore) won’t sit flat (tack) against your body. But that’s ok, they won’t fit like a regular bra, they are made to mould to the shape of your ever- changing body. At Storm in a D cup, we know our bras and we’ve been fitting pregnant and nursing women for over 15 years. We carry maternity bras from two specialist maternity bra makers – Cake Maternity and Hotmilk – these two brands only make maternity bras, so we think they know their stuff. We also stock maternity bras from big cup expert brands including Panache, Elomi and Goddess. A good flexi-wire bra will have lower cup support and a stretch top cup to allow for fluctuations in size. At this time you might want to try a flexi-wire t-shirt bra, which is a bra with a seam free cup that won’t show up under your clothes. You’ll need at least three on rotation so get a few different colours and styles.
What’s the difference between a nursing bra, a maternity bra and a sports nursing bra?
In Europe, a maternity bra is worn while you’re pregnant and a nursing bra, or breastfeeding bra, is worn while you’re nursing. In Australia, New Zealand and parts of America and Canada nursing bras and maternity bras are one and the same – they all have nursing clips that allow you to drop the fabric of the cup to allow you to breastfeed. A pumping bra helps hold your breast pump in place, and they are not usually made to be very supportive for everyday activities. In fact they are great as a sleeping bra too. A maternity sports bra or nursing sports bra, simply means that the bra is made from sport-smart fabric, that is moisture wicking, breathable, with limited stretch to hold everything in place during exercise. They also have nursing clips on them so you can feed your baby before or after sport without having to get changed.
What do I take to hospital with me?
As your due date approaches it’s a good idea to get a couple super soft bras for when your breasts first get engorged with milk. Sugar Candy by Cake is a great for this, as is My Necessity by Hotmilk. You might also want a pumping bra that doubles as a sleep bra or some tank tops, like the Toffee Nursing tank, that also has drop down cups. You’ll also need some wire free breastfeeding bras now, and it’s a good idea to have several of them on rotation. If you stock up before birth and then you can’t wear the size you bought, don’t worry because Storm in a D cup offers 365 day exchanges and free returns on all our bras. Some of the popular maternity bras we stock include Hotmilk, Cake maternity, Elomi, Goddess and Freya. All our pregnancy and nursing bras are made from soft, comfortable fabrics and beautifully designed to provide femininity and function to its wearer.
We understand that support and convenience are extremely important during pregnancy and breast feeding, and our range of nursing bras do just that. One of our best-selling nursing bra is the Pure underwire moulded nursing bra. This maternity bra comes with seam-free cups in a lightweight foam spacer fabric that is breathable and comfortable. The bra offers complete support to the bust even when feeding, with hassle-free drop clips for convenience during on-the-move feeding. Another popular maternity bra is the Beatrice Wirefree nursing bra. This bra is available from a back size of 10 to 22 and cup size from F to JJ cup. Made in non-stretch fabric with moisture wicking properties, this maternity bra has four hooks that offer enhanced back support. Further, the seams in the cups are enclosed to prevent skin irritation and the cups drop down with a squeeze release.
For a seam free nursing bra that easily doubles as a sleep bra, look no further than the Sugar Candy nursing bra (which also comes in a non-nursing style without clips). Using cutting edge design, aimed at supporting a fuller bust (starting from an E Cup), the Sugar Candy nursing bra really gives breastfeeding boobs a lift. Lot’s of new mums don’t realise that you need something to keep your breast pads in place, so that you don’t leak during the night (there’s nothing like bed sheets smelling like dried up milk). Storm in a D Cup also carries a range of nursing cami tops and nursing nighties in case you don’t want to sleep in a bra. These also have drop down cups for nursing because anyone who has had a baby knows you are going to be up several times a night with your new born!
You can wear a flexiwire nursing bra while you are pregnant up until you give birth. While your milk comes in and until breastfeeding is well established (6-8 weeks) you should wear a wire free nursing bra. This is because your breasts change so much during this time, and will fluctuate in size between feeds. You don’t want unnecessary pressure from underwires on your breasts at this time! This could lead to mastitis and all kinds of problems! Because there’s no wire, there tends to be more coverage in a wire free nursing bra. Some of the most supportive styles are Show Off by Hotmilk, and Tea full cup nursing bra by Cake Maternity.
